Fate and Fortune in the Canterbury Tales - 2034 Words
Fate and Fortune in Chaucerââ¬â¢s Canterbury Tales The Canterbury Tales were written by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century. This masterpiece is one of the greatest classics of English Literature, it was and continues to be still very popular. Many manuscripts survived and it was the first work to be printed by William Caxton. It is a story about pilgrims travelling together, who tell stories on their journey to Canterbury, to pay tribute to Saint Thomas Becket. As it is a collection of tales, it varies in genre (there is beast fables, romances, fabliaux, saintsââ¬â¢ livesâ⬠¦), subject, mood, length (some tales are 80-page long whereas some are much shorter), form (in verse ââ¬âseveral verse-form are also found- or in prose). Fortune cannot be trusted: ââ¬Å"who may truste on Fortune any throwe?â⬠(The Monkââ¬â¢s Tale, 2136), ââ¬Å"For whan men trusteth hire, thane wol she failleâ⬠(The Monkââ¬â¢s Tale, 2765) because she is also changeable: she can favour one person one day, and turn her tail the day after. The Monk tells the story of Alexander in saying ââ¬Å"Fortune him made the heir of hire honourâ⬠(2643) at the beginning, and stating at the end ââ¬Å"Thy sis Fortune hath turned into aas / And yet for thee ne weep she nevere a teereâ⬠(2661-62). Her ceaseless change can be sumned up into one single sentence: ââ¬Å"Fortune was first freen, and sitthe fooâ⬠(2723). Benefits of Human Resource Consulting-Free-Samples for Students
Question: Discuss the benefits of human resource consulting at Natural Resources Limited, Australia to tackle the problems related to the recruitment of engineering graduates. Answer: Introduction The report is prepared to discuss the benefits of human resource consulting at Natural Resources Limited, Australia to tackle the problems related to the recruitment of engineering graduates. To fulfill the needs of resourcing, it is important for NRL to undertake different graduate recruitment strategies and campaigns and even seek my consulting opinions and advices for ensuring successful recruitment campaigns too. As a HR consultant, the recruitment manager of NRL has approached me to obtain information and knowledge for overcoming the recruitment challenges and ensure meeting the targets of graduate intake within the organization (Conrero, 2016). Background of the present situation The background of the current situation mainly illustrated the problems faced while managing the engineering graduate intake targets. It was also seen that among the five offers made to the engineering students, only one candidate was selected, which made NRL lower its selection criteria and standards too. Due to this, many of the positions remained not filled and few of the major causes of such kinds of issues could be long lead time taken for filling the vacancies for graduates, failing to assess the applications of graduates properly, degraded job performance and lower uptake of the graduate employment opportunities. The company even focused on recruiting external candidates with a 3 to 6 years of experience and this could further result in higher costs incurred than the recruitment procedures for the intake of internal graduates to fill the vacancies (Buettner Timm, 2018). The recruitment manager has asked Jenny to make improvements but due to the lack of skilled human resources and knowledgeable team members, she faced difficulties in managing the project internally. The consulting project will be undertaken for ensuring that the graduate recruitment programs are managed properly along with the filling of vacancies at the organization with ease and efficiency (OSUGI et al., 2016). Project scope statement The consulting project scope statement defines the scopes and opportunities created for recruiting the most suitable engineering graduates at NRL, Australia. To determine the project scope statement is essential for determining the feasibility and cost that may be incurred while managing the graduate engineering program with ease and effectiveness (Martensen et al., 2016). The project scope statement also includes consideration of various aspects including the management of effective board governance and proper coordination of Board and roles of the employees. The leaders must possess a common vision and goal to select the right candidates who can achieve the new vision as well as strengthen the financial management, furthermore enhance the image and credibility among the various stakeholders in business (Lazazzara, Karpinska Henkens, 2013). Proposed project plan The business organization was failing to attract the right engineering graduate candidates, because of which, it was difficult to meet the business needs and furthermore ensure proper business functioning all throughout. The proposed business project plan should include the various aspects to make sure that the consulting project is successful and the rightly skilled and knowledgeable candidates are selected as part of the workforce. NRL has taken help from a third party provider to manage the Assessment centre stage properly and carry out the various processes during the recruitment such as conducting the first interview, checking their resumes, short listing the candidates, generation of employee contact and finally managing the event all throughout the recruitment process (Aleksandrovna, Alekseevna Alexandrovna, 2017). Project plan activities Time taken Organizational assessment and developmental plan 15 days Identification of the recruitment and strategic goals and objectives 7 days Assessing the availability of resources required for managing the project 8 days Action plans should include proper staffing to create a consulting group and even evaluate the operating budget 15 days Drafting the recruitment plan 10 days Review and approval by the recruitment manager of NRL 7 days Figure: Project plan GNATT chart (Aleksandrovna, Alekseevna Alexandrovna, 2017) Proposed deliverables The deliverables proposed could include the recruitment planning, initial assessment and evaluation of the resumes provided by the candidates to get selected and then addressing the issues presented in the report. The organizing of members, staffing and recruitment guidelines stated in the Board Development plan that should be followed could also be included as deliverables. The strategic planning, customized process of planning could also help in addressing the issues and create a much better, realistic and flexible strategic plan to achieve the business goals and objectives with ease and effectiveness. The project deliverables also include the development of supervisory and leadership management activities along with the identification of performance goals at each position. The customization of the engineering graduate recruitment process would also benefit the selection of the most suitable individuals who have applied for the job vacancies at NRL (Proctor et al., 2014). This woul d also allow the recruitment department to overcome the issues faced as well as make sure to provide proper job descriptions and Personnel management policies known to the candidates. More candidates would be selected and this could fill up the vacancies that were left within the organization. The project deliverables could also be the various information sources including the NRL recruitment procedure, engineering graduate students and recruitment policies and procedures. The data and information obtained from the recruitment information system are also considered as important project deliverables (Morgeson et al., 2013). Project cost, terms and confidentiality Jenny has been provided with an amount of $10,000,which she can spend on improving the current scenario and hire a consulting firm to address and issues and rectify those as well. The charges for the consultants on an hourly basis are $200 for the principal consultant per hour, $150 per hour for the senior consultant and $100 per hour for the consultant team members. These are the fixed costs whereas the variable costs during the recruitment process would include the expenses incurred during the short listing of candidates, conducting interviews, etc. The costs were broken down and presented in the form of a diagram, based on which, the expenses should be done (Conrero, 2016). Figure: Cost breakdown structure (Conrero, 2016) Project consultants credentials The qualifications or credentials that should be possessed by the project consultant include 3 to 6 years of experience in the field of engineering and they must be accustomed with the recruitment consultation activities too. The recruitment consultants could be open to graduates regardless of the degree subject, though for the company individuals from the engineering discipline would be referred. Gaining entry with a HND degree could be beneficial as well with relevant skills, abilities and level of experience. The project consultants must also hold relevant interpersonal and communication skills along with problem solving abilities (Buettner Timm, 2018). The consultants should be able to complete their tasks within the deadline and not intend to miss targets, which would also promote team working and creativity during the management of recruitment and selection processes at NRL, Australia. The Presidental Limits Essay Example For Students
The Presidental Limits Essay The President of the United States is the most powerful wo/man in the world. There are few limits to what s/he can do. The Constitution created the institution of the presidency in 1789, power of the president has gradually grown from what was first envisioned. The presidential powers were set up to be limited by separation of powers into three branches of government, by the checks and balances scribed in the constitution, by federal systems, political parties and the media. The president is elected for a four-year term in office, maximum of eight years. Framers of the Articles of Confederation felt that liberty could only be enjoyed with checks set up by an executive branch of government. The Constitution guarantees the presidency power as chief of state, chief executor, commander and chief, chief legislator, and chief diplomat. We will write a custom essay on The Presidental Limits specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now As chief of state, the president is head of state and government, which overflows into the position as chief executive. The head of government manages the organization of the executive branch of the government. The executive branch of the government includes fourteen cabinet departments, and sixty executive and regulatory agencies. Many countries have a Prime Minister and a monarch to oversee the government. The monarchââ¬â¢s job is the head of state, and the Prime Minister would be head of government. The president is the administrator of the peopleââ¬â¢s power, and the figurehead for the nation. The chief executive has the power to grant reprieves and pardons to citizens for infractions against the United States. The bureaucracy is often inflexible for the president. The president is commander and chief of the US armed forces. The president reserves the right to order all wars and full dispatch of the armed forces. The commander-in-chief power has been cited to justify commitment of the armed forces to scores of short-term hostilities. In 1973 Congress passed the War Power Act it states the president has to report to Congress the use of military force with in forty-eight hours, must report to Congress if the combat lasts more than sixty days, and Congress holds the right to withdraw troops at once, which is not subject to presidential veto. The constitution states that Congress has power to declare war, they have not done so since 1941. The powers granted to the president as commander and chief are vast. Since s/he has to contend with Congress and the bureaucracy their power can weaken. Chief Legislator of the United States can address the nation to tell the American public their new legislative program. If the counter party primarily controls Co ngress, the president holds little to no power in the legislative office. The presidentââ¬â¢s role as chief diplomat of the United States requires the direct communication with leaders of other countries, and to promotion the interests of the United States abroad. To ensure the United States does not appear divided to the rest of the world the president is allowed to use his own discretion with regard to foreign policy. The Constitution does not clearly describe the role of the president in foreign policy. It states that the president can make treaties and receive and appoint foreign ambassadors, with the requirement that they have to be approved by a two-thirds vote of the Senate. The president also has the power to acknowledge foreign governments. The United States refused to acknowledge the Soviet Union until after the Russian Revolution. This two-thirds rule has often driven presidents to use executive agreements instead. The term executive agreement is not in the Constitutio n. They are agreements between the president and foreign leaders that do not require Senate approval. The presidentââ¬â¢s power is only weakened in this area if Congress intervenes. Like other kinds of power, formal presidential power cannot always be used in all its fullness. Several major factors determine the way presidents exert power at any given time. A president needs opportunities for using power. Presidents have employed their powers most fully in visible major crises, such as the Civil War and the world wars, and in grave economic emergency such as the Great Depression of the 1930s, when one-fourth of the workforce was unemployed. When crises are less obvious, as in the energy crisis of the 1970s, the president may have difficulty persuading the public and Congress of the necessity for serious action. .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 , .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .postImageUrl , .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 , .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402:hover , .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402:visited , .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402:active { border:0!important; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402:active , .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402 .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u34a90b619de865ea5ec2b28da0ff9402:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: P1 web architecture and components ver2 EssayThe President has roles that were not stated in the constitution, chief of party, and the media. The president relies heavily on his personal and political skills for these roles. Personality characteristics cause a president to work very hard, but without being attuned to public sentiment. The strivings of these individuals may become so compulsive as to lead to the rigid and futile pursuit of a policy. President Wilson, for example, took an absolute stand on the League of Nations, rejecting compromises that might have saved much of his project in the Senate. How the president uses power may also depend on the presidents own co nception of the office. Some presidents, such as Buchanan or Taft have interpreted their powers narrowly, declining to act unless power was specifically granted in the Constitution or in statutes. At the other extreme are the presidents who, like Roosevelt, felt constrained in their positions only by what is expressly forbidden by the Constitution. Public opinion has a great impact on the presidentââ¬â¢s decisions, s/he can not make all people happy with one decision. Often presidentââ¬â¢s have to consider their actions effects on their political party. The presidential office is protected by a rigorous impeachment procedure. Conviction requires a two-thirds vote of the senators present. President Nixon, facing impeachment and almost certain conviction, became the first president to resign. President Ford, exercising the presidents pardoning power, pardoned Nixon for all federal crimes that he committed or may have committed or taken part in. Johnson and Clinton were the only two presidents to be impeached and win acquittal. Clinton won by a larger margin than Johnson did. Presidents also claim to possess executive privilege, or the right to withhold information from Congress and the public. In court proceedings concerning Watergate, President Nixon and Whitewater, President Clinton sought withhold evidence from the Supreme Court. The courts ruled that executive privilege did not immunize either of them from judicial proceedings. After the long drawn out and eventually unpopular Vietnam War and the excesses of Watergate, the presidency passed into an era of criticism and reassessment. The office was seen to have become inordinately powerful and to be threatening or violating civil liberties. It was viewed as having placed the political system in disarray by drawing excessive power to the presidency at the expense of the other branches. All too often the presidencys power expands by congressional default by the disinclination of the legislature to deal directly with national problems. The bureaucracy of the executive branch has shown itself incapable of a great deal of initiative, addicted to established routines and averse to new ideas with their accompanying risks of failure, the bureaucracy has preferred to leave innovation to the White House staff. This in turn has perhaps encouraged presidential subordinates to use and abuse their power in ways that are symptomatic of the presidencys excesses. In the late 1970s, however, public sentiment began to call for a more assertive presidency that could provide greater leadership to a fragmented and interest ridden Congress and that could act decisively on the array of stubborn problems that troubled Americans. President Jimmy Carters inability to guide many of his legislative initiatives through Congress weakened his administration. Carters successor, Ronald Reagan, who won two landslide election victories, was notably more successful in getting Congress to do his bidding, especially in the areas of increased military spending and tax reform. However, the Reagan administration stumbled into the Iran Contra Affair. In effect the appropriations process was bypassed, a grave violation of the Constitution. Congress became more assertive after Watergate, passing the War Powers act and other measures to control presidential abuses. It also created its own Budget Office to sharpen its annual review of the budget. Congress employed the appropriation s power to constrain presidential initiatives in foreign affairs, with consequences that could be seen in the chief executives limited responses to military crises in Angola and Zaire. Congress enlarged its own body of experts on committee staffs, in the General Accounting Office, in the Congressional Budget Office, and in the offices of individual legislators and committees, enhancing its ability to challenge the bureaucracies of the executive departments. .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 , .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .postImageUrl , .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 , .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6:hover , .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6:visited , .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6:active { border:0!important; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6:active , .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6 .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1f28e0a3d3570000f4a269ab4c9c23c6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Social Rejection Essay PaperThe presidency was created with broad controls, the people in the position learned how to get around the controls. Long Tail Marketing Essay
Long Tail Marketing Essay Long Tail Marketing Essay Are you wondering what this long-tail marketing is? Me too!! The bookish definition says: ââ¬ËLong Tail Marketing is a technique to increase sales while decreasing the cost per sale by developing and selling to thousands of niche markets. It has implications within search engine marketing, online selling and advertising purchasesââ¬â¢ Woo, thatââ¬â¢s too technical, but what I understand is that the bottom line is to increase sales. Well, this is what any SBU would aim for. We have read about the strategies of doing this in Prof. Philip Kotlerââ¬â¢s Marketing Management text book. I didnââ¬â¢t read or hear anything like long tail there. So when I first heard this term it urged me to start exploring about it and how it is related to marketing. Well hereââ¬â¢s what I have understood and found. The term long tail is coined by Chris Anderson, the editor in chief of Wired magazine. He is also a writer and author of his 2006 book, The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More. ââ¬Å"Selling less of moreâ⬠well thatââ¬â¢s interesting! It is said, he brought to light how the technological era and Ecommerce is changing todayââ¬â¢s Marketing and Economics strategy. What he meant is that selling small volumes of hard-to-find or unique items to many customers helps organization to realize significant profit compared to selling large volumes of popular items to few customers. The total sale of this large number of ââ¬Å"non-popular itemsâ⬠is called "the long tail". How it works and the way it is different from the traditional sales cycle I would like to explain this further with an example. Suppose you own a record store. In that store your physical area is limited to what you can easily keep in stock and have readily available. As the saying goes, 20% of sale of the select or popular albums will account for 80% of your revenue. Keeping this in mind and also due to the physical limitation of inventory, it would be in your best interest to stock and fill your shelf space with the more popular items which thereby limits your chances of stocking the less popular or niche obscure albums which will have less demand. So now just think what can happen if we can take away the physical barriers and go to electronic distribution! We know that online music stores has virtually limitless inventory. This would allow us to keep even the most uncommon or niche albums in stock all of the time. Here is the interesting part. Due to the amount of large volume and available choices to your audience you will find enough demand for all of your obscure albums which will actually make up to a substantial part of your business. Selling very few copies of an enormous amount of different albums adds up to a significant part of the revenue compared to selling more copies of few albums. ITunesââ¬â¢s worst performing albums still get a few downloads every couple of months. Knowing that the long tail part of the distribution curve can make up a significant part of revenue is what I feel is pushing companies to go online and sell their products. Thus the boom of digital marketing is happening. The firms can carry more products at virtually no extra cost. Companies like Amazon, Apple and Yahoo have already imbibed this strategy and we all know the result. An example from Chris Andersonââ¬â¢s

ACT vs SAT Which Students Should Take Which
ACT vs SAT Which Students Should Take Which SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips As a high school student, youââ¬â¢re probably wondering whether you should take the SAT or the ACT. Which one will give you a better score? Is one easier than the other? The answer is not as straightforward as you might think. Everyone has different test-taking strengths and learning styles. Based on these factors, it might be to your advantage to take one test over the other. In this article Iââ¬â¢ll go through a list of different strengths and weaknesses you could have as a test-taker and as a student in general and which test you should take based on these qualities. Test-Taking Abilities and Style These are a few common pitfalls unrelated to content that students encounter on standardized tests. It might be better for you to take one test over the other based on your experience with these issues. Youââ¬â¢re an anxious tester If you tend to get really nervous on test day, you are probably better off with the ACT.The ACT has much more predictable structure and content than the SAT, so you can prepare more confidently. On the reading section of the ACT, for example, there are always four passages in the same sequence of genres: Prose Fiction/Literary Narrative, Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science. On the SAT, the structure is not as reliable. We know the topics that appear and the types of passages and questions, but not their order on the test. On the ACT, once the section for a subject is over, thatââ¬â¢s it - youââ¬â¢re done with it for the whole test. This is in contrast to the SAT, which has ten sections, six of which are ordered randomly. The SAT also has an experimental section on every test that wonââ¬â¢t count towards your scores and sometimes contains unfamiliar material, which can throw you off. You wonââ¬â¢t have to worry about this on the ACT. You get tripped up by confusing wording Itââ¬â¢s a better idea to take the ACT if this is a problem for you. The SAT has weird question wording that could trick you if you often get confused by that type of thing. The ACT is very straightforward in its question wording, so you usually have a clear sense of what the questions are asking right away rather than having to think about it too much first. For example, a reading question on the ACT might ask ââ¬Å"What was Sam trying to accomplish by talking to her sister?â⬠A reading question on the SAT might ask something more like ââ¬Å"If the author of passage 1 reads lines 16-24 of passage 2, which of the following is she least likely to offer as a response?â⬠You have to jump through a couple more hoops of ââ¬Å"this, not thatâ⬠logic before you can answer the question. You tend to run out of time If you have time problems, itââ¬â¢s a better idea to take the SAT.Why? You get more time per question, and itââ¬â¢s broken up into ten short sections rather than four long ones. This means that if you have a time problem on one section, it will not necessarily tank your scores. You will have a couple other sections to make up for it (3 math, 3 critical reading, 2 writing). On the ACT, each subject is just one long section, so if you get stuck on a difficult question and end up messing up your timing for a whole section, itââ¬â¢s going to have a much bigger impact on your scores. Anecdotal evidence from students also points to more problems with time pressure on the ACT than the SAT. But what if Iââ¬â¢m an anxious tester AND I tend to run out of time, which test should I take? If you have both of these problems, you should plan on doing a lot more prep before your next test. The decision is probably going to rest on where your strengths lie as far as content, which Iââ¬â¢ll get to in the next section. Time: The one true enemy of us all. Subject Strengths Let's move on to actual test content. I'll go through the different subject areas tested on the SAT and ACT and which test is the better one to take based on whether you excel or struggle in these subjects. Math Case 1: I consider numbers to be my only real friends If you have great math skills, the test where you stand to gain the biggest advantage is the ACT.The ACT tests more advanced math concepts than the SAT, and no formulas are provided for you (except on some individual questions). It also requires math problem-solving speed and stamina - you will need to solve 60 questions in a row with only a minute for each question. The ACT asks math questions in a more straightforward way than the SAT, so if your math skills are good but your reading comprehension skills are less so, the ACT is the test you want to take. Case 2: Math fills me with wrath You might be better off with the SAT if math is not your strong suit. The questions are more broken up (three sections, two 25 minute and one 20 minute), so if you mess up or run out of time on one math section you wonââ¬â¢t necessarily ruin your score. You will have more time per question (67 seconds rather than 60), and the math concepts tested are not as advanced. The SAT also gives you formulasto work with at the start of the math sections. Reading Case 1: Iââ¬â¢m a word nerd If you enjoy reading, itââ¬â¢s likely that you already have a strong base of vocabulary and can read passages fairly quickly. If you know a lot of advanced vocabulary words, youââ¬â¢re better off taking the SAT.Sentence completion and vocabulary in context questions make up a significant portion of the critical reading section, and a prodigious vocabulary will give you a leg up.There are also a lot of confusingly worded questions on the SAT in general. Youââ¬â¢ll have a much easier time surmounting that obstacle compared to students who arenââ¬â¢t as good at reading. On the ACT, knowing advanced vocabulary wonââ¬â¢t help your score much if at all.You might consider taking the ACT if youââ¬â¢re a fast reader and are very good at reading comprehension, not just vocabulary. These skills will help you on the Reading AND Science sections. Case 2: Iââ¬â¢m a Spark Notes type of guy/gal This is tough, because reading skills are very important on both tests.Iââ¬â¢d say if you are not as fond of reading you should take the ACT.Though there is a lot of reading involved and a lot of time pressure, the questions tend to be more straightforward and less confusing than those on the SAT.You also donââ¬â¢t need to know advanced vocabulary to do well.Practice reading quickly and understanding passages before the test - this will be extremely important on Reading and Science. My brain will just absorb the words. That's how reading works, right? Grammar Case 1: I'm the grammar police, and you're ALL UNDER ARREST If you're good at grammar, you could really take either test, but you'll probably have the biggest advantage on the SAT. The multiple choice on the SAT Writing section is similar to the ACT English section, but it is less passage-based. Most of it is identifying errors in sentences and improving sentences out of context. On the ACT English section, questions are always asked alongside a corresponding passage, so you have more context to work with for your answers. Case 2: I don't care 'bout no stupid grammar The SAT Writing section and the ACT English section will both be tough for you if youââ¬â¢re not so great at grammar, so study the grammar rules beforehand! The ACT English section might be slightly easier because, as mentioned above, it asks its questions in the context of long passages. But it also has a lot more questions (75 vs. 49 on the SAT), so it's a trade-off. Essay Writing Case 1: Iââ¬â¢m the next Hemingway If you're a great writer, you should take the SAT.On the SAT you will be writing an essay no matter what, and you only get 25 minutes to do it.The essay also accounts for about a third of your Writing subscore.Essay prompts on the SAT are varied and require you to formulate opinions and examples to support them very quickly, which is difficult if you don't already have strong writing skills. Case 2: I donââ¬â¢t have the write stuff If youââ¬â¢re not as into writing, the ACT is a better choice. You donââ¬â¢t even have to write an essay, and if you do take it with Writing the essay wonââ¬â¢t impact your composite score. You also get 40 minutes for the essay rather than 25, and prompts tend to be more straightforward. Prompts on the ACT ask students to consider how changes in the world today will affect humanity in a broad sense, and you can use abstract reasoning and even made up examples to support your points. Science Case 1: I am the lovechild of Bill Nye and his very attractive microscope (donââ¬â¢t ask me about logistics) Take the ACT!Although the science section doesnââ¬â¢t actually require much scientific knowledge beyond basic concepts you learned in elementary school, knowing a lot of science can help you get a better grasp on the experiments and data presented on the test.Youââ¬â¢ll have a much easier (and faster) time understanding whatââ¬â¢s going on and answering the questions if you are familiar with the science involved. Case 2: I break out in hives when I see a test tube. If you donââ¬â¢t like science, take the SAT.You should know that you CAN still do well on the science section of the ACT without knowing much science at all. However, itââ¬â¢s easy to get overwhelmed by the data presented and unfamiliar background information even if the questions themselves are not that hard.If you think seeing chemical equations or physics on one of these standardized tests will give you a heart attack, go with the SAT so you wonââ¬â¢t have to worry about it. Aughhhh I said no science! You KNOW I'm allergic! Summary and Follow Up In deciding which test to take, you should consider both your testing style and your subject strengths. Here's a summary of the situations listed above and my corresponding test recommendations: Test anxiety? ACTEasily confused by questions? ACTTime problems? SATGreat at math? ACTGreat at reading? SATGreat at grammar? SATGreat at writing? SATGreat at science? ACT Additionally, If you have a strong imbalance in your abilities in different subjects, you might be better off with the ACT.This is because your individual scores on each section are not nearly as important to colleges are they are on the SAT. On the ACT, your composite score is pretty much the only thing that matters. You also wonââ¬â¢t have to deal with switching unpredictably between subjects you know well and subjects you struggle with during the test. If you're still not entirely sure which test is best for you or which strengths and weaknesses you have, you should take an ACT practice test and an SAT practice test(each with the official time constraints so you'll know if running out of time is a problem!). Look up average standardized test scores for colleges you would like to attend to figure out your target score for both the ACT and the SAT. Then, score your practice tests and see where you end up. Is one test score significantly closer to your target score than the other? If so, that's the test you want to take. If the scores are similar, you may need to decide based on which test format makes you feel more comfortable. On test day, you'll be under a lot more pressure! What's Next?
